Description

This course is based on a suite of internationally acclaimed and evidence- based training that empowers and equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to support a friend or family member experiencing a mental health problem or experiencing a crisis.

Mental Health First Aid is the help offered to a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing the worsening of an existing mental health problem, or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional support is received or until the crisis is resolved.

Duration & Format

This course can be delivered:

  • In person at Richmond Training Institute
  • Online instructor led
  • Blended online (A blended course option includes self-learning modules and instructor led sessions)

This is a 25-hour course, which is delivered as follows:

  • 12 hours of face-to-face lectures (excluding breaks)
  • 12 hours of self-learning
  • 1-hour online examination

Entry Requirments

All learners attending this course must be eighteen years or older and must have basic proficiency in either English or Maltese.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will explore a spectrum of approaches to recognising and addressing mental health challenges.

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health problems in adults.
  • Use an evidence based action plan to initiate a mental health first aid conversation
  • Assess for a range of crisis situations and provide initial support.
  • Understand the prevalence and impact of mental illnesses, risk factors and treatment and supports available.
  • Apply self-care practices as a Mental Health First Aider.
Structure of Programme

This course covers common and disabling mental health problems and crisis situations. Participants learn how to apply mental health first aid to adults across a range of situations, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems
  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Panic attacks
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Traumatic events
Assessment

Participants must attend all 12 hours of instruction and achieve a pass mark of 80% or higher.

At the end of the course, students will complete a one-hour online multiple-choice exam, designed to assess their understanding of the core principles covered in the lectures. The primary objective of the exam is to demonstrate learning progress for students. It also serves as a benchmark for measuring the knowledge gained throughout the course.

The course must be completed within two weeks, and upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate valid for three years. To maintain valid certification, participants may apply for a four-hour refresher course prior to expiration.

This course is accredited at a Level 3 within Malta Qualification Framework (MQF) and Level 3 European Qualification Framework (EQF) for lifelong learning.

Course Fee

Large groups: €2,550 per group (15 participants or less) and €170 for each additional participant.
Individuals or small groups: €170 for every participant.
