Duration & Format
This is a 25-hour course, which is delivered as follows:
- 14 hours of face-to-face lectures (excluding breaks)
- 10 hours of self-learning
- 1-hour online examination

Entry Requirments
All learners attending this course must be eighteen years or older and must have basic proficiency in either English or Maltese.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems in young people.
- Use an evidence based action plan to initiate a mental health first aid conversation
- Assess for a range of crisis situations and provide initial support.
- Understand the prevalence and impact of mental illnesses, risk factors and treatment and supports available.
- Distinguish between normal and expected changes during adolescence and development of mental health problems.
- Apply self-care practices as a Mental Health First Aider.
Structure of Programme
The programme consists of four sessions:
- Session 1: Introduction and Depression
- Session 2: ALGEE for Depression
- Session 3: ALGEE for Anxiety and Eating Disorders and ALGEE for Eating Disorders
- Session 4: Psychosis and ALGEE for Psychosis and Substance Use Disorder, and ALGEE for Substance Use Disorder
All sessions will be delivered using a variety of complementary teaching methods, including presentations, videos, practical exercises, group work, and role play.
Assessment
Participants must attend all 14 hours of instruction and achieve a pass mark of 80% or higher.
At the end of the course, students will complete a one-hour multiple-choice exam, designed to assess their understanding of the core principles covered in the lectures. The primary objective of the exam is to demonstrate learning progress for both students and instructors. It also serves as a benchmark for measuring the knowledge gained throughout the course.
The course must be completed within two weeks, and upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate valid for three years. To maintain valid certification, participants may apply for a four-hour refresher course prior to expiration.


This course is accredited at a Level 3 within Malta Qualification Framework (MQF) and Level 3 European Qualification Framework (EQF) for lifelong learning.
