Building stronger communities through Mental Health First Aid

The Mental Health First Aid Malta to Italy (MHFA MI) project is an Erasmus+ Small-Scale Partnership led by Richmond Foundation (Malta) in partnership with Fondazione Jonathan ETS (Italy). The project aims to introduce the internationally recognised MentalHealth First Aid (MHFA) programme to Italy, beginning in theMilan region and creating the foundations for expansion across the country.Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based training programme that equips people with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to recognise the signs of mental health challenges, provide initial support, and guide individuals towards appropriate professional help. Just as physical first aid enables people to respond to physical emergencies, MHFA empowers communities to respond effectively to mental health crises and emerging difficulties.

Over an 18-month period, the project will:

  • Adapt the MHFA curriculum to the Italian cultural, social and healthcare context.
  • Translate and professionally design all learning materials in Italian.
  • Organise a study visit to Malta for Italian educators and mental health professionals.
  • Pilot the training with key stakeholders in Italy.
  • Develop an Italian digital learning platform and mobile application.
  • Raise awareness through a public event in Milan.
  • Establish a roadmap for the long-term sustainability and accreditation of MHFA in Italy.

The project targets educators, health and social care professionals, volunteers, employers, community leaders, parents and members of the general public. By improving mental health literacy, reducing stigma and encouraging early intervention, MHFA MI seeks to create stronger, more resilient communities where people are better prepared to support one another during times of mental distress.

Building on Richmond Foundation’s more than a decade of experience delivering Mental Health First Aid in Malta, the project represents an important step towards sharing proven good practice across Europe and making high-quality mental health education accessible to more people.
