Standard Mental Health First Aid

Description

The Standard Mental Health First Aid course teaches participants how to provide initial support to another adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis revolves.

Duration & Format

Mental Health First Aid is a 12-hour course, which can be delivered as:

  • A 2-day training package (6 hours per day excluding breaks)
  • 4 separate training modules (3 hours each excluding breaks)
  • Blended Online (45 minutes introductory session, 2 sessions of 2.5 hours each, and 6 hours of online self-learning modules to be completed between sessions)

This can be delivered:

  • In person at Richmond Training Institute (at an additional cost) or on location
  • Online instructor led
  • Blended Online (A blended course option includes self-learning modules and instructor led sessions)
Suitability

This course targets three main audiences: individuals aged 18 and older, corporations, and educational institutions. These groups span various age ranges, including 19–30, 31–65, and 65 and older.

Entry Requirments

All learners attending this course must be eighteen years or older and must have basic proficiency in either English or Maltese.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health problems in adults.
  • Use an evidence based action plan to initiate a mental health first aid conversation
  • Assess for a range of crisis situations and provide initial support
  • Understand the prevalence and impact of mental illnesses, risk factors and treatment and supports available
  • Apply self-care practices as a Mental Health First Aider
Structure of Programme

This course covers common and disabling mental health problems and crisis situations. Participants learn how to apply mental health first aid to adults across a range of situations, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems
  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Panic attacks
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Traumatic event

Course Fee

Large groups: €2,250 per group (15 participants or less) and €150 for each additional participant.
Individuals or small groups: €150 for every participant.
