The Teen Mental Health First Aid course teaches students how to provide initial peer to peer support to a friend or classmate who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

Teen Mental Health First Aid
Description
This course is to be given complimentary to Youth Mental Health First Aid.
Duration & Format
3 face to face sessions of 80 minutes each.
Suitability
There are 2 versions of this course:
- Version 1: Adolescents between 13-15 years
- Version 2: Students between 16-18 years
Entry Requirments
Participants can be adolescents between 13 and 15 years old or between 16 and 18 years old, depending on which course they will be attending.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems in young people.
- Know when and how to seek the support of a trusted adult.
- Use evidence based action plan to initiate a mental health first aid conversation.
- Understand the prevalence and impact of mental illnesses, risk factors and treatments and supports available.
- Know the barriers to help seeking and how to overcome these.
Structure of Programme
Students learn how to:
- Recognize when a friend or classmate is developing a mental health problem
- Have a supportive conversation
- Identify signs of a crisis such as suicidal thoughts
- Know when and how to seek the support of a trusted adult.
Certification
The course must be completed within two weeks, and upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate valid for three years.
